Welcome back to our two-parter on that wonderful thing called air conditioning. In the first post we talked about how homes stayed cool before air conditioning was a staple.
Now let’s look at the ways people stayed cool during the summer when turning down the thermostat wasn’t an option. For the best AC repair Wake Forest has to offer, call Choice HVAC today!
How People Stayed Cool Before AC
Air conditioning was invented over 100 years ago, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that people started buying them for their homes. They were unwieldly and expensive, so it was considered a luxury. As technology advanced and their popularity grew, they became common in most people’s homes. Before that time, people had to do other things to stay cool. Let’s take a look at some of them.
The Egyptians were pretty smart. Not only did they build the pyramids, they figured out a way to keep cool. They would hang damp sheets in open doorways so that when a breeze came through it would make a nice cool mist. Maybe you should try that the next time your AC goes out in the middle of the night and you have to wait until the morning for Choice HVAC to arrive.
Take a look at any old home and it’s likely you’ll see a big porch. Sitting on the porch was a common past-time in the summer. You may have memories of sitting on Grandma’s porch while she shelled green beans from her garden. She was smart. The porch provided shade, cool breezes and she could see what was going on in the neighborhood.
Believe it or not, sleeping was a way to keep cool. During the day, at those peak times of heat, you really couldn’t manage to do anything but nap. In the south, those porches were perfect for napping. Siestas, or afternoon naps, are still common among people in hot climates such as Spain.
What you wear can determine how cool you feel. I’m not suggesting going au natural unless you’re in the privacy of your own home, but you can wear lighter clothing. Cotton and linen have always been known to be great for hot days because they’re breathable.
Have you ever seen men in seersucker suits? Those were worn in the summer months by business men because they’re cooler than the standard wool suits.
In more recent days, box fans were used to keep rooms cool. People would put a box fan in the window to cool off the room at night, and it generally worked once the sun went down and the night had cooled off. Not only did they get a cool room, they also got the semi-soothing sound of a fan lulling them to sleep.
Movie theaters have been around for nearly 100 years, and many were air conditioned. In fact, they were one of the first businesses to install it. One of the perks of going to see a movie, aside from being entertained and eating popcorn, was getting out of the heat for a couple of hours.
