HVAC Resolutions for 2020

With 2020 only days away, you're likely not thinking about your HVAC system. However, while you're in the process of creating your resolutions for the new year, we thought it might be wise to put in a plug for keeping your family comfortable with respect to your HVAC system. Want to know more? Today we'll discuss how you can optimize your home comfort and resolve to be better to your HVAC system in 2020.

HVAC Resolutions

HVAC Resolution #1: Learn repair warning signs

The faster you recognize signs that your HVAC system needs repair, the quicker you can get the system fixed and restore home comfort efficiency. Some of the most common problems include issues with your thermostat, broken reversing valves, and power loss, but there are others. If something seems off, call your HVAC technician and schedule an appointment.

HVAC Resolution #2: Keep plants and foliage maintained

One of the most common reasons that your heat pump will stop working is that the unit is obstructed. If the airflow to your unit is blocked by snow, ice, leaves or any other type of debris, your heat pump will have to work harder to do its job. Do your part to keep everything running smoothly by trimming bushes, shrubs, branches, tall grass, and any other foliage that may be growing near the unit. You should try to keep a two-foot clearing around the unit. Not only will this keep the unit free of blockages, but it also will allow room for your HVAC technician when he or she needs to run maintenance on the system.

HVAC Resolution #3: Regularly change your air filter

More specifically, check and replace the air filters in your home once a month to maintain efficiency and keep your HVAC system running smoothly. A clogged filter can dramatically decrease your indoor air quality, restrict airflow within your home, increase energy costs, and cause your system to break down much faster than if you simply changed your air filters more regularly. Let this be the year that you check your air filter monthly and replace or clean the filter if it is dirty.

HVAC Resolution #4: Schedule an annual maintenance check.

One of the best ways to ensure that your HVAC system is running efficiently and keeping your family comfortable is to schedule an annual maintenance check with a qualified HVAC technician. During your tune-up, your HVAC technician will make sure your system is clean and lubricated while also checking for any repair needs. Typically, fall HVAC maintenance checks include a furnace tune-up, while your air conditioner is usually tuned up just before you really need it in the summer.

HVAC Resolution #5: Check your insulation and ductwork for leaks.

Resolve this year to check your insulation in attics and crawl spaces, and seal any leaks that you may find. While you're at it, be sure that air ducts are also sealed. Poor insulation and leaks in your ductwork are the most common reasons that cool or warm air escapes, which causes your HVAC system to work less efficiently. Choose to ignore it for another year and we guarantee that you'll drive energy costs up, which will only cost you more money each month.
