Do you know the difference between these two refrigerants? For homeowners who have an air conditioner or a heat pump, understanding the distinction is important. It's also important to have your HVAC system cleaned and serviced before you turn on your furnace for winter. Many homeowners don't know that not having their air conditioner or furnace checked twice a year could void the manufacturer's warranty on their unit. Choice Heating and Air Conditioning is proud to offer planned maintenance agreements which help homeowners protect their HVAC systems and their budget. R-22 - Freon
Once the standard choice for air conditioning systems, R-22 has been found to deplete the ozone layer along with other chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). More than 30 years after they were banned from production, this chemical is still being phased out. By the year 2020 only reclaimed and recycled R-22 will be available. Older systems that need this refrigerant will have to pay more to have it recharged. HVAC technicians must have a special EPA registration to purchase, carry, and use R-22.
R-410A - Ozone Friendly Refrigerant
Invented in 1991 and commercially available in 1996, R-410A is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) that uses fluorine rather than bromine or chlorine. R-410A operates at higher pressures, and because it is less chemically stable, the coolant breaks down before it reaches the ozone layer. It costs less than R-22, and while R-410A is a powerful greenhouse gas, it is better for the environment than the old refrigerant. All heat pumps and air conditioners made after 2010 use R-410A, but only some compressors manufactured between 1996 and 2010 use R-410A.
While no law requires homeowners to retrofit their air conditioners or heat pumps, choosing to update your existing units will require you to get a new compressor. Typically upgrading these systems to use the R-410A coolant is very expensive. Most homeowners find that removing their old unit that uses R-22 and installing a new eco-friendly unit is the best course of action.
