Goodbye 2020, hello 2021! I think we're all ready for a fresh start after the year we just had (am I right?); and with a new year, now is as good a time as any to make a few New Year's resolutions. Sure, you want to lose a few of those extra coronavirus pounds, but have you thought about your HVAC System? Considering how much your HVAC system affects your family's comfort level all year long, we think it only makes sense to create some HVAC goals for 2021. Here are our top 5 goals.
HVAC Goal #1: Schedule Annual Maintenance
Your #1 HVAC Goal for 2021 should be to keep up with the annual maintenance for your HVAC system, and the best way to fulfill this goal is to go ahead and schedule your next maintenance check with a licensed professional (or at least mark your calendar to give us a call this spring). We recommend two routine tune-ups a year.
During your HVAC tune-up, your service technician will inspect all of the components that make up your HVAC system. If anything isn’t working as it should, your service technician will be able to repair it right away (or at least come up with a plan). Identifying problems early will reduce the risk of a system-wide failure and expensive fix when you need your HVAC system most (typically the hottest and coldest days of the year). Ask about our HVAC service agreement that may qualify you for discounts on parts and labor.
HVAC Goal #2: Get to Know Your HVAC
While we don't recommend that you ever try to repair your HVAC system on your own, we do suggest that your second HVAC goal should be to get to know your HVAC system in 2021. While your HVAC technician is conducting a tune-up, feel free to ask us a few questions such as (you may be able to find the answers to these questions on your own):
- What is the brand and model of your particular system?
- How do you completely turn it off if you need to?
- Which circuits on your circuit board are connected to the system?
In addition to learning about your system, be sure to document each time you have your system serviced.
HVAC Goal #3: Commit to Regularly Cleaning or Replacing Your Air Filters
We feel a bit like a broken record when we remind you to regularly clean or replace your air filters, but we can't possibly discuss HVAC Goals without adding this one to the list. Your HVAC system not only contributes to your family's comfort level, but it also affects your respiratory system. Considering how concerned we've all become with breathing over the past year thanks to COVID-19, regularly cleaning, changing, or replacing your air filters should be a top priority in the new year.
Clean air filters contribute to easy breathing. Dirty air filters can cause allergies to flare, dust to settle on your surfaces, and your HVAC system to run less efficiently which often translates into a higher bill. This year, make it your HVAC goal to clean or replace your air filters every three months or less.
HVAC Goal #4: Clean Your Ductwork
Something we don't think about as often, but that has a large impact on your home's ability to deliver fresh air throughout your home is your ductwork. Just as your air filters become dirty if they aren't regularly replaced, your ducts can become incredibly dusty over time and need to be cleaned. Ideally, you should have your ductwork cleaned semi-annually to prevent allergy flare-ups and breath easier. If you've never had your ducts cleaned, make 2021 your year!
HVAC Goal #5: Program Your Thermostat
Finally, the last HVAC goal we recommend for 2021 is to program your thermostat. Most modern HVAC systems include programmable thermostats that allow you to schedule specific temperature settings based on the times you're most often home or away. Not only can you be more comfortable in the new year, but you can reduce energy waste and save money each month by programming your thermostat.
So, while you're vowing to eat right and exercise more in the new year, we hope you'll also make the commitment to giving your HVAC a little extra attention in the new year. We can help you achieve those goals, so be sure to give Choice HVAC a call at 919-435-2711. Happy New Year!
