4 Reasons to Upgrade to a Smart Thermostat in 2021

If there's one thing we learned last year, it's that technology has become essential to our modern lives. Without it, many of us struggle to communicate, work, learn and play; especially in the middle of a pandemic. However, even before the coronavirus was a thing, technology was being incorporated into home operating systems. From smart refrigerators that will show you how many eggs are in a carton to home security systems and everything in between, we can't imagine life without these "smart" features. As such, when it comes to home comfort, we have to talk about smart thermostats. If you live in the Raleigh area, here are x reasons why you should upgrade to a smart thermostat in 2021.

1. Smart Thermostats are Remarkably Better than Mercury and Digital Thermostats

We don't make this claim lightly, so let's first (briefly) discuss mercury and digital thermostats.

Mercury Thermostats

Although mercury thermostats are becoming rarer and rarer, they are still around. Typically when we run across a mercury thermostat, it is installed in a home that is well over 20 years old. The temperature is controlled by a needle and they tend not to be very accurate. Furthermore, mercury thermostats only have heating or cooling settings. While mercury was the industry standard for residential and commercial properties years ago, it has been replaced by digital thermostats.

Digital Thermostats

Our customers often confuse digital thermostats with smart thermostats as they look very similar and allow users to adjust the temperature depending on the time of day. While we agree that digital thermostats do a great job of regulating temperature, we find that they can't beat the flexibility or intelligence of a smart thermostat.

Smart thermostats take what the digital thermostat does to another level with its high-tech features and capabilities, including the ability to understand routines and behaviors and make automatic adjustments.

2. Smart Thermostats Allow You to Remotely Change the Temperature

Building on the previous point, one of the most practical features of a smart thermostat is that you can remotely change the temperature from anywhere in the world.

While a digital thermostat can automatically adjust the temperature in the morning or the evening such that you can come home after a long day's work to the perfect comfort level, it can't change the temperature remotely. Any temperature adjustments have to be programmed directly into a digital thermostat.

Most smart thermostats have built-in Wifi capability that allows you to change the temperature anywhere you can catch an internet signal. So, if you find yourself in a rush to get out the door and forget to adjust the thermostat before you leave, have no fear. You can adjust your smart thermostat from your phone, tablet, computer, or anything else that you may use to access the internet!

3. Smart Thermostats Will Save You Money

While being able to change the temperature anywhere in the world is quite practical, one of the biggest advantages of a smart thermostat (and ultimately the reason most people will upgrade to one) is that smart thermostats will save you money!

Smart thermostats are designed to monitor energy usage. As such, you can easily use them to keep track of your utility expenses. Paired with energy-saving HVAC equipment and you may find the savings to be even more significant. Smart thermostats are able to reduce energy usage when you aren’t at home. As such, your HVAC system isn't working around the clock to produce a temperature you don't need. Therefore, not only will a smart thermostat lowers your monthly bills, but it can often reduce maintenance bills and repair costs.

4. Improve Air Quality

We don't typically recommend upgrading to a smart thermostat if your primary concern is air quality, however, smart thermostats can help.

Smart thermostats can let you know when an air filter needs to be changed or if your HVAC system requires maintenance. Most smart thermostats also include a humidity sensor, which helps keep the relative humidity in your home at a comfortable and healthy level. If you have a whole-home humidifier, a smart thermostat can help you achieve even more benefits as it relates to improving your air quality.
